What is Catnip?

Frequently asked Questions about Cat nip

What is catnip?

Catnip (nepeta cataria) is from the mint family, and is also commonly known as catswort, catmint, and cat nip. It is native to much of Asia and Europe, but is now grown in many parts of the world.

How does catnip affect cats?

Catnip enters the feline's nose and is believed to mimic a cat pheromone - in other words, it acts like an aphrodisiac for cats.

Is it safe to give my kitty cats catnip?

If your cat acts silly or relaxes when exposed to cat nip, then it is safe to give. If your cat gets aggressive, give it with caution, as your cat may scratch or bite you and other members of the family.

Do all kitty cats like catnip?

Only 50% to 70% of cats are affected by catnip - the reaction is inherited. Kittens under 6-8 months and older cats are less likely to have a reaction. You may have one cat who is mad about it and another who is totally disinterested.

Why give my kitty cats catnip?

  • Give catnip to relax a cat and unleash a silly side
  • Give cat nip toys to encourage play and exercise
  • Rub on scratching posts to keep they from scratching your furniture
  • Watching cats with catmint is entertaining for the whole family
How will my cats act with catnip?
Your cats may do of the following:
  • Lick, chew, and drool on the catnip
  • Roll and pounce on the cat nip
  • Rub their cheeks on the catmint
  • Lie on their back with paws extended
  • Run around like a silly kitten
  • Settle into a dreamy sleep
  • Aggressively protect their cat nip
  • Attack you or others in the household
What is the best way to give catnip to my kitty cats?
  • Rub on their scratching post
  • Sprinkle on your cats' bed or favorite spot
  • Tie in a small piece of natural material
  • Make cloth or fur toys stuffed with catmint
  • Refresh old toys in the catnip bag overnight
How much catnip should I give at a time?

A few pinches is usually enough.
Crush the catnip between your fingers to release the fragrant oil.

Is it okay to put catnip in my cats' food?

No, it might affect your cat's appetite and eating patterns.

Does catnip lose its potency over time?

We suggest buying a three month's supply for maximum potency. Like many cut or ground herbs, catnip will lose much of its potency within a year. See "How should I store catnip?" below.

How should I store catnip?

Please store catnip in a dark, cool, location such as in a jar in your cupboard, or in an amber glass jar with airtight lid  - the oil in catnip is UV sensitive. We often get reports of cats hunting down our catnip and chewing through the bag, so store in a cat-proof location. Check out what our Customers say for a good laugh!

Why buy 100% organic catnip?

There are no regulations on selling catnip to cats and since catnip grows wild, it can be picked from unsafe locations.

Why is our catnip the world's best catnip?

If we gave away our secrets, we would no longer be the world's best, but we can tell y
ou our catnip is an unbelievably potent strain and 100% organic.
